Some people may have to undergo many dental procedures and be unable to afford them. Many low-income people, including pregnant women, can enroll in Medicaid, depending on their state’s program. Like other people, pregnant women still need to visit the dentist, and fortunately, they can utilize their Medicaid coverage for some dental services.

Dental care and pregnancy

Expectant mothers should visit the dentist for annual exams and cleanings because, according to the American Pregnancy Association, “The rise in hormone levels during pregnancy causes the gums to swell, bleed, and trap food causing increased irritation to your gums.” Without preventive care, they can develop “oral infections such as gum disease, which has been linked to preterm birth.”

Pregnant women should also undergo other needed procedures, such as emergency root canals and extractions, as well as fillings and crowns, to reduce any chance of infection. Usually, women in their second trimester can undergo dental procedures safely, but, during their third trimester, it can be difficult for them to lie on their back for an extended procedure. zx

Pregnant women need dental care, but they could postpone some procedures until they give birth to their baby. They should schedule less urgent procedures like teeth whitening and other cosmetic treatments until after giving birth as they may pose a risk to the child.

Medicaid and pregnant women

With Medicaid, low-income pregnant women can pay for their dental care more easily. For those under 21, the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment (EPSDT) benefit allows them to receive some dental coverage such as exams, cleanings, restorations, and treatment for infection.

Those over 21 may receive dental coverage for a variety of dental procedures depending on the rules of the state they live in. For instance, some states may allow coverage for emergency, preventative, and restorative treatment while others may cover emergency treatment only.

Expectant women need to visit their dentists to take care of their teeth. For those with a tight budget, Medicaid coverage could help alleviate the costs of their dental care.
