D4355 Revision in 2023

February 2, 2023 Dental Billing 3 min read

Are you aware of the CDT 2023 revision to code D4355?  This code is underutilized due to clinical and administrative hesitation around it. But beginning January 1st, 2023, the code D4355 was revised by the ADA to address several shortcomings to the previous code language which required a comprehensive oral evaluation and diagnosis at a subsequent visit.

In the 2023 CDT code set, D4355 has been revised to replace the word “oral” with “periodontal” in the description. There has also been a revision to remove the entirety of the previous CDT code nomenclature that stated “Full mouth debridement involves the preliminary removal of plaque and calculus that interferes with the ability of the dentist to perform a comprehensive oral evaluation. Not to be completed on the same day as D0150, D0160, or D0180.”

Why revise D4355?

Per the American Dental Association, “These revisions clarify that full mouth debridement is a procedure reported with its own unique code (D4355).” Since its original revision, however, the American Dental Association (ADA) revised its stance on this code and the subsequent visits.
